Prayer (again)

They raised their voices together to God …When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

The early Christians in Jerusalem were in a tough place. For they were a small group of ordinary people, they were following a discredited leader who’d been killed by a brutal occupying power working in cahoots with the religious authorities, and their two main spokesmen had just been arrested for illegal preaching. So, when those men were released from custody, what did they do? It would have been natural for them to turn in on themselves and have a good moan about their woes. Words

Words are powerful. They have the ability to encourage or crush people, to anger or soothe, to inspire or condemn, to incite hate or reach out in love – and much more besides. Although I realise that dogs bark and dolphins seem to have sophisticated ways of communicating with each other, nevertheless it is humans who have uniquely been given the capacity for complex and intelligent speech.
