What’s it all about?
Throughout Christchurch’s history we have almost always had a youth club run by volunteers from the church. Our current team have been running youth club for the past 8 years.
Friday nights are busy, full of fun and activities.
We start off all together as a group for the first 10-15 minutes or so as the children gradually arrive. This time is spent in discussion and simple activities on a broadly Christian theme usually following the seasons of the year. This is a chance for the children to think about the world around them and to share their own ideas.
The bulk of the evening is spent as free time or child-led activities. We have a tuck shop, a small room used for dancing, games, art and craft space and there is always a team game on the go – football and basketball being the favourites. The group are free to choose any of these activities as well as just making use of the space for catching up with their friends and unwinding after a long week in school.
Our volunteers offer support and encouragement to the young people during the evening and enjoy joining in games with them.
In the summer months we fling wide the doors and make use of our outside space.
At the end of the evening we come back together for a (competitive!) game e.g. quick hockey or bulldogs (no physical contact allowed!). All are encouraged to take part to the best of their individual ability.
During the year we run occasional trips and recently have visited Boulders a few times and recently we ran the St John Ambulance Junior Young Life Saver Award with a small group.
Come along and give it a go!
