Welcome to our service today, in which we focus on the sordid story of Herod’s birthday party, his wife’s plotting, his step-daughter’s dancing, and John the Baptist’s sad demise.
We begin with Isaac Watts’ splendid hymn “I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breath” to a tune called “Monmouth” – this video includes a second verse which I’ve never seen before!
Our closing hymn is one which we probably associate more with Advent, but it reminds us of how John the Baptist constantly sought to direct peoples’ gaze at Jesus – “On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry”:
